The program doesn't appear in the Get Programs section of the Control Panel while connected to MSOE internet, and the link from previous discussions keeps timing out and saying that it took too long to load. Are there any other options, or am I doing something wrong?

It's Spring Break! I hope everyone has some time to relax this week and have some fun too. But do you know what's really fun? Winning free money!

falonelmo.gif

With this extra time you have this week, it's important to remind you all that you can and should do your own scholarship searching! Money Monday is a great place to start, not to mention the only place you'll find scholarships exclusively for MSOE students, but there are so many more scholarships out there that I don't post. Why? Because what I post here I try to make sure is broad enough that more than one person will qualify because I don't want to waste your time and I want to make sure that you are finding scholarships you qualify for. BUT, there are so many specific scholarships out there!

For example:

  • Are you vegan or vegetarian? There's ascholarshipfor that!
  • Want to make your prom outfit out of Duck Tape? There's ascholarshipfor that!
  • Are you involved with horses? There's ascholarshipfor that!
  • Do you write or illustrate science fiction? There's ascholarshipfor that!

I could go on, but I think you get my point. Beyond your academic interests and merits, there are so many other scholarships you may qualify for that are based on your interests or other characteristics such as your geographic area, ethnic background, religion, and more. If there is something that makes you unique, different, or "weird" then there is most likely a scholarship for it - you just have to find it!

defweird.gif

So, I encourage you to use some of your spring break time to go out and find some scholarships that are specific to YOU and your interests! College Greenlight is a great place to start searching, as are these other websites that we share with you. And, when all else fails, there's your trust friend Google. And high school students: be sure to check with your guidance counselor or pre-college person at your school because this is the time of year when local scholarships will be promoted and they may not even put them online but rather just send them to the high schools.

If I can help you in your scholarship search in any way, please let me know!

Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods

Presentation by Milwaukee historian and author
John Gurda

John Gurda is a Milwaukee-born writer and historian who has been studying his hometown since 1972. He is the author of twenty-one books, including histories of Milwaukee-area neighborhoods, industries, and places of worship. The Making of Milwaukee is Gurda’s most ambitious effort. With 450 pages and more than 500 illustrations, it is the first full-length history of the community published since 1948. He served as scriptwriter and host of an Emmy Award-winning documentary series based on the book in 2006. Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods, a richly illustrated geographic companion to the general history, followed in 2015. In addition to his work as an author, Gurda is a lecturer, tour guide, and local history columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His undergraduate degree is a B.A. in English from Boston College, and he holds an M.A. in Cultural Geography and an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The common thread in all of Gurda’s work is an understanding of history as “why things are the way they are.

MILWAUKEE: CITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS Geography matters in Milwaukee. From the very beginning, rivers and railroads divided the city into distinct “Sides”—North, South, East, and West—with dramatically different characters. Within those districts dozens of smaller communities developed—places like Bay View, Layton Park, Pigsville, Washington Heights, Rufus King, Riverwest, and North Point. The result is a mosaic of small-scale hometowns that make the city both intelligible and approachable. Join local historian John Gurda for a lively, illustrated look at the patterns that have made Milwaukee pre-eminently a city of neighborhoods. A book sale and signing will follow the program.

The story about how I created a cloud storage service...

$

After graduating from MSOE I was in deep trouble to think what would be the field I am interested in and would like to follow in my future career. Luckily a friend of mine was already working at Dropbox, so I got a peak into what the cloud would effectively mean as a field of business. It was then when an idea arose to create a cloud storage service which would address not only the storage of files, but also the collaboration with others.

A couple of years went by doing research, during this time I was already working for Amazon just in my field of interest - the cloud. So when the setting was right, I took the chance to create XXL Cloud as being an alternative to the already established cloud storage firms. So one might ask, why create a cloud storage service, when the competition is already light years ahead in acquiring and forming the market?

Do your thing, even if the odds are against it

Doing my homework, checking out the cloud storage market I found one very interesting thing. The cloud was a multi-billion dollar market already. So would I put myself in the position to compete with unicorns like Dropbox or Box.com? Friends and relatives voted against this venture, approaching VCs and Angels - the same. So what would be the sense to create a Cloud Storage business if I wouldn't be able to fund it? And yet. I decided to go for it. To create something really great I would be proud of. Yet I had not found what would be the USP (Unique Selling Proposition) for what I had to offer, but this crystallized pretty soon after getting hands on, actually writing the prototype of XXL Cloud. Security was in demand, and when thinking about it, there was a huge gap between simply storing files with a provider such as Amazon S3 and securely storing data in the cloud, without anyone being able to tamper with my data. So the idea changed and switched towards a secure service, which would allow users to store files encrypted, and this being said, encrypted end-to-end.

Data would need to be encrypted on a users device with a key which would not be allowed on any other device, and not be transferred to the servers which would handle data synchronization. After the initial problem solving phase - after all there was a prototype which we tested with a sample 2500 users. 6 month of fixing bugs and creating the final release version. Finally I launched the service - against any odds, and now, 6 month in business a dazzling 100K users are already using it.

So never ever don't do your thing. If you believe it, go for it. Whoever, whatever - find out for yourself - and be the entrepreneur you deserve to be.
