SE Academic Advising

Advising policy

All software engineering students are encouraged to meet with their advisor whenever they have questions regarding their academic and career plans. SE students must see their advisor quarterly to discuss academic and career plans and progress. They must receive their advisors' clearance before registering; the online registration system enforces this.

You can meet with your advising before you receive your quarterly registration notice from the Registrar, so do not wait until the last week!

Advising season typically starts in week 7.  Many advisors will post sign-up sheets with available advising slots their office door. Please sign up for one of these slots; signing up early will give you a wider choice of times. Some advisors will notify you of other appointment procedures (e.g., Outlook) or Google docs.

What to bring to the meeting with your advisor

Advisors

The MSOE Registrar keeps track of the advisor assigned to each student. If you are not sure who your advisor is, you can find out by following these steps.

  1. Log in to my.msoe.edu
  2. Click Personal Info (next to your name in the top bar)
  3. Click Academic Info within the My Info window
  4. Your advisors will be listed in the first section.

The SE advisors are Profs. Hasker, Hornick, Schilling, and Taylor (advising info).  All their offices are located on the 3rd floor of the Library.

Two-degree Tracks

A two-degree track for a combined CE/SE dual major is available. This track follows a 5 year plan, but students have accelerated the course sequence and finished in one or two quarters beyond 4 years. Please see your advisor or CE program director (Dr. Durant) for more information.

Closed Section Requests

If you are unable to construct a schedule with all of the courses you need, you will need to follow the closed section request policy for the given course.  Details here.

TransCanada Diverse Community Engagement Tour

The consistent question between suppliers and candidates is: “How do I get in?”

The belief, backed by testimony and history, is that if, “I could only get a seat at the table, ‘they’ won’t regret it.”

The energy industry is the new gold rush. The opportunities are constantly identified as plentiful, but there is a lack of qualified individuals to tap into the vastness of the rewards. At TransCanada, we have energy for change. We desire to share knowledge in communities where we build and operate as well as with those who have historically been underrepresented from opportunities in the energy sector. We want to do our part to shore up the energy pipeline with a qualified workforce and suppliers who represent diverse segments of the community.

We are asking you to join us for our Diverse Community Engagement Tour. Our objective is simple; engage and educate diverse communities and millenials about opportunities with TransCanada and let it serve as energy for pursing other opportunities that are available in the oil and gas industry. We anticipate participants will walk away educated, informed and empowered to take tangible steps for workforce and supplier readiness.

Stemmy_CarterAcademy.jpgThe 2015 Excellence in STEM Awards – the Stemmys were presented at the 11th annual sySTEMnow Conference on Oct. 27. MSOE receives two Stemmys: one for the Carter Academy and a second for the GE Girls at MSOE program.

In the education category, MSOE received a Stemmy in recognition of the Carter Academy. The award is given to the educational institution whose curriculum, individual activities, and/or overall program demonstrates a unique approach and/or unparalleled commitment to promoting STEM awareness and improving the STEM competency of K-12 students. The Carter Academy at MSOE was established in 2013 to deliver an intense academic pre-college program for potentially qualified students who wish to enroll at MSOE, but need further development of their math, science and writing skills. The program bridges the gap from high school to MSOE for students who show high academic potential and an interest in pursuing a STEM-related career. It was made possible thanks to an endowed gift from Dr. Gene and Mrs. Patricia Carter.

Stemmy_GEGirls.jpgIn the partnership category, MSOE and GE Healthcare were recognized for the GE Girls at MSOE program. The award is given to the business, governmental agency, association, foundation or other organization whose educational outreach efforts, in partnership with individual students and/or local schools demonstrates a unique approach and/or unparalleled commitment to promoting STEM awareness and improving the STEM competency of K-12 students. MSOE and GE Healthcare have partnered to offer this program every year since 2012. Its purpose is to inspire middle school girls to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) through engaging and challenging hands-on experiences using STEM skills in collaboration with women role models currently working in related industries.

Milwaukee School of Engineering is an independent, non-profit university with about 2,800 students that was founded in 1903. MSOE offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, business and nursing. The university has a national academic reputation; longstanding ties to business and industry; dedicated professors with real-world experience; a 96% placement rate; and the highest ROI and average starting salaries of any Wisconsin university according to PayScale Inc.
